CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Area residents looking for a meaningful and impactful way to give back to the community are invited to an evening Volunteer Information Session with Literacy Volunteers of Charlottesville/Albemarle (LVCA). This free, no-obligation virtual event will be held on Tuesday, August 5, from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM and offers a comprehensive introduction to the rewarding experience of becoming an adult literacy tutor.
This one-hour session, conveniently held on Zoom, is designed to fit into your busy schedule and provide a clear understanding of how you can empower adults on their educational journeys. The evening is thoughtfully structured to be both informative and interactive:
6:30 PM – 7:00 PM: The Mission and the Role The first half of the session will feature a presentation detailing the vital work of LVCA. You will learn about the organization’s core mission: to promote adult literacy through equitable, inclusive, free, and confidential one-to-one tutoring. The presentation will shed light on the diverse population of learners in our community—from native English speakers working to improve their basic literacy to immigrants and refugees striving to learn English and prepare for U.S. citizenship. You will also get a clear overview of a volunteer’s responsibilities and the profound impact your time and support can have on an adult learner’s life, family, and career.
7:00 PM – 7:30 PM: Your Questions Answered Following the presentation, the floor will be open for a dedicated question-and-answer period. This is your opportunity to engage directly with LVCA staff, likely including a member of the volunteer coordination team like Rita Thomas, who organized this session. Whether you’re curious about the time commitment, the comprehensive tutor training provided, the process of being matched with a student, or the resources available to support you, this open dialogue is designed to provide thorough and thoughtful answers.
LVCA believes that the ability to read, write, and communicate is critical for adults to fully realize their potential as individuals, parents, and citizens. As a volunteer tutor, you become a direct partner in that journey. No prior teaching experience is required—only a desire to help and a commitment to making a difference.
This information session is the perfect first step to see if this flexible and deeply rewarding volunteer opportunity is right for you.
