Discover How You Can Make a Difference: An Invitation to Join Literacy Volunteers of Charlottesville/Albemarle

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Community members interested in making a profound and lasting impact on the lives of adults in the Charlottesville and Albemarle area are invited to a virtual Volunteer Information Session on Tuesday, July 8th, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. This online event, hosted by Literacy Volunteers of Charlottesville/Albemarle (LVCA), offers a comprehensive introduction to the organization and the vital role volunteers play in empowering adults through literacy and English language skills.

This one-hour session, conveniently held on Zoom, is the perfect first step for anyone considering becoming a volunteer tutor. The evening is structured to be both informative and interactive. The first thirty minutes will feature a presentation by a member of the LVCA team, likely led or organized by Rita Thomas, the Volunteer and Program Coordinator. This presentation will delve into the heart of LVCA’s mission: providing free, confidential, one-on-one and small group instruction in basic literacy and English as a Second Language. Attendees will gain insight into the significant need for these services within our community and learn how LVCA’s programs directly address these challenges, fostering greater opportunity and self-sufficiency for their adult learners. The presentation will also outline the specific responsibilities and expectations for volunteer tutors, ensuring a clear understanding of the commitment involved.

Following the presentation, the latter half of the session is dedicated to a live Q&A. This is an invaluable opportunity for prospective volunteers to engage directly with LVCA staff, ask specific questions, and hear from experienced volunteers about their journey and impact. Whether you have questions about the time commitment, the training process, or the types of learners you might work with, this open forum is designed to provide clear and thoughtful answers.

LVCA has a rich history of supporting adult learners in the community, and its success is built upon the dedication of its volunteers. By becoming a tutor, you can help individuals achieve their personal, professional, and family goals, from reading a book to their child for the first time to securing a new job or preparing for the U.S. citizenship test. No prior teaching experience is necessary, as LVCA provides all the necessary training and ongoing support to ensure their tutors are confident and effective.

This information session is a no-obligation opportunity to learn more about how you can contribute to this life-changing work. To register for this informative and inspiring session, please visit the following link: https://forms.gle/xAgLXjsk5bFPhGgG6.
