CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – For the dedicated volunteer tutors at Literacy Volunteers of Charlottesville/Albemarle (LVCA), professional development and community building come together in the monthly Tutor Book Group. This engaging gathering offers a unique opportunity for tutors to connect with their peers, explore literature relevant to their work, and deepen their understanding of the adult learners they support.
The next meeting will take place on Saturday, July 19, 2025, from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM in the vibrant community space of the Jefferson School City Center, located at 233 4th St NW. This meeting is part of a recurring series held monthly on the third Saturday, providing a consistent and accessible forum for volunteers.
Facilitated by LVCA staff member Heather, the book group is more than just a casual reading club. It is a thoughtfully curated space for professional reflection and growth. The group selects books that often touch upon themes of literacy, education, immigration, diverse cultures, and the power of human connection—all central to the mission of LVCA. By reading and discussing these works, tutors can gain new perspectives, share teaching strategies, and explore the challenges and triumphs experienced by adult learners.
Past selections have included titles like “The Reading List” by Sara Nisha Adams, a novel that celebrates the role of libraries and reading in forging community and overcoming loneliness. Discussions are typically lively and collaborative, allowing tutors to share insights from the text and connect them to their own tutoring experiences.
This book group serves as a vital form of ongoing support and enrichment for LVCA’s volunteers. It fosters a strong sense of community among the tutors, who work one-on-one with learners throughout the area. It is an ideal setting for both new and veteran tutors to build relationships, find inspiration, and feel more connected to the broader mission of empowering adults through literacy.
Volunteer tutors who are interested in joining this enriching conversation and connecting with fellow educators are encouraged to reach out to Heather at heather@literacyforall.org. New members are always welcome.
