CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Get ready for a delightful evening of music, community, and summer fun at the annual “Sounds of Summer” concert on Saturday, July 12, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the historic Benjamin Tonsler Park. This free event, presented by Charlottesville Parks & Recreation and Bama Works, is a cherished community celebration that invites residents and families to gather, relax, and enjoy a vibrant Saturday evening.
Bring your blankets and lawn chairs and settle in for live musical performances in the heart of one of Charlottesville’s most significant community spaces. While the specific musical guest for the evening will be announced closer to the date, the series is known for featuring talented local and regional artists. In addition to the great music, the event will feature free food (while supplies last) and a variety of lawn games, making for a festive and family-friendly atmosphere.
The event takes place at Benjamin Tonsler Park, located at 500 Cherry Avenue. More than just a backdrop, the park is a location steeped in local history. Named in honor of Benjamin Tonsler, a highly respected educator who served as the principal of the Jefferson School during the era of segregation, the park has been a vital hub for Charlottesville’s African-American community for generations. Established in 1946, it was one of two parks in the city dedicated for use by the Black community and has since evolved into one of the most beloved and actively used parks in Charlottesville.
Today, the 8.7-acre park boasts a recreation center, lighted basketball courts, a spray ground, a little league field, and extensive playground equipment, serving as a testament to community investment and pride.
The “Sounds of Summer” event is a perfect opportunity to enjoy the beautiful park, connect with neighbors, and celebrate the rich cultural tapestry of Charlottesville. All are welcome to come together for an evening of melody, history, and community spirit.
