Learn How to Empower Adults in Our Community: A Virtual Introduction to Literacy Volunteers

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Discover a rewarding volunteer opportunity that directly impacts the lives of adults in our community by attending a virtual Volunteer Information Session hosted by Literacy Volunteers of Charlottesville/Albemarle (LVCA). This welcoming and informative online event will take place on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM and is the perfect first step for anyone considering becoming a volunteer tutor.

This convenient one-hour session, held on Zoom, will be led by LVCA volunteer Steven. As an active participant in the organization’s mission, Steven will provide a firsthand perspective on the volunteer experience and the profound effect it has on adult learners. The session is designed to be both comprehensive and interactive, offering a clear picture of how you can get involved.

The agenda for the information session is structured as follows:

• 12:00 PM – 12:30 PM: Informational Presentation: Steven will guide attendees through a presentation detailing the vital work of LVCA. This segment will cover the organization’s history, its mission to provide free, confidential instruction in basic literacy and English as a Second Language, and the significant need for these services in the Charlottesville and Albemarle County area. You will also learn about the specific roles, responsibilities, and flexible time commitments of volunteer tutors.
• 12:30 PM – 1:00 PM: Open Q&A Session: Following the presentation, the floor will be open for questions. This is an excellent opportunity to engage directly with Steven and LVCA staff, ask specific questions about the training process, the learners, and the support provided to volunteers, and hear answers to questions from other prospective tutors.

Becoming a tutor with LVCA requires no prior teaching experience, only a desire to help empower individuals to achieve their personal, professional, and family goals. LVCA provides all necessary training, resources, and ongoing support to ensure you are confident and effective in your role.
