Discover How You Can Empower Your Community: A Virtual Introduction to Literacy Volunteers

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Area residents looking for a flexible and deeply rewarding volunteer opportunity are invited to a virtual Volunteer Information Session hosted by Literacy Volunteers of Charlottesville/Albemarle (LVCA). This free, one-hour introductory event will be held online via Zoom on Thursday, September 4, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, offering a convenient way to learn how you can make a profound difference in an adult’s life.

This session is the perfect first step for anyone curious about becoming a volunteer tutor. It is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the organization and the vital role its volunteers play. The hour is thoughtfully structured to be both informative and interactive:

  • 12:00 PM – 12:30 PM: Presentation on Mission and Impact: A member of the LVCA team, likely Volunteer and Program Coordinator Rita Thomas, will lead a presentation detailing the organization’s mission. You will learn about the critical need for adult literacy and English language instruction in our community and how LVCA provides free, confidential, one-to-one tutoring to help learners achieve their goals. The presentation will cover the specific responsibilities of a volunteer tutor and the profound impact you can have—helping adults gain the skills to read to their children, secure better employment, obtain a driver’s license, or become U.S. citizens.
  • 12:30 PM – 1:00 PM: Live Q&A Session: Following the presentation, the floor will be open for your questions. This is an invaluable opportunity to engage directly with LVCA staff. Whether you have questions about the time commitment, the comprehensive training provided for all new volunteers, or the process of being matched with a learner, this segment is dedicated to providing you with clear and thorough answers.

No prior teaching experience is necessary to become a tutor—only a desire to help and a commitment to empowering a neighbor. LVCA provides all the training and resources you need to be a confident and effective tutor.

If you’re ready to explore a volunteer role that changes lives and strengthens our entire community, this information session is for you.
