CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – For those with a passion for helping others and a desire to make a tangible difference in the community, Literacy Volunteers of Charlottesville/Albemarle (LVCA) invites you to its comprehensive New Tutor Training session. This free, in-depth workshop will take place on Saturday, August 23, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the historic Jefferson School City Center, a vibrant community hub located at 233 4th St NW.
This engaging training is your first step toward the rewarding experience of providing free, one-to-one instruction to adults seeking to achieve their life goals through education. Absolutely no prior teaching experience is required. The only prerequisite is a desire to empower a neighbor on their path to success, whether that means reading a book to their child, securing a better job, or preparing for the U.S. citizenship interview.
Organized by LVCA’s dedicated staff, including Rita Thomas from the volunteer outreach team, this workshop is designed to fully equip you with the skills and confidence needed to be an effective and compassionate tutor. Over the course of the day, you will learn:
Upon completion of the training and a background check, LVCA asks for a commitment of one year, tutoring for about two hours per week. You will be carefully matched with a student, and LVCA provides robust, ongoing support, including professional development workshops and access to a network of experienced staff and fellow tutors.
By becoming an LVCA tutor, you are not just teaching—you are opening doors to opportunity, fostering self-sufficiency, and helping to build a stronger, more inclusive community.
